WWE has held an annual Survivor Series show since 1987. Historically, the show has been headlined by a Survivor Series match. This is an eight or ten-man elimination tag team match in which two teams fight for bragging rights.

In some cases, there have been stipulations in which a losing team has to be fired. For example, in Survivor Series 2014, the main event was The Authority vs. Team Cena. Had Team Cena lost, all of John Cena's teammates would have been fired. They didn't lose, which meant that The Authority was removed from power.

This year, there is a new twist on the Survivor Series event. WWE's head of creative Triple H revealed this year's event will be called Survivor Series: WarGames.

“We’ll have a men’s WarGames match and a women’s WarGames match. The tradition of the Survivor Series has ebbed and flowed and changed slightly over time, but this will be similar to that,” Triple H told The Ringer in an exclusive interview.

What Is WarGames?

The match was created by wrestling legend Dusty Rhodes in 1987. The match was originally held in the National Wrestling Alliance before becoming an annual World Championship Wrestling showcase.

This match features two rings surrounded by a steel cage. Teams of four or five wrestlers fill the rings, with pinfalls and submissions becoming legal once every competitor has entered the match. There are no disqualifications, and the use of weapons is permitted.

This is the first time a WarGames match will be featured on a major WWE premium live event. The match has been seen a few times in NXT, with the most recent match being in December of last year. Adam Cole has made the most appearances in WarGames with four appearances.

There is also a variation of the match found in All Elite Wrestling, called Blood and Guts. The cage used by AEW has a roof on it. Former WWE legend Chris Jericho has been involved in both Blood and Guts matches in the company's history.

Story Focused

Triple H also revealed the Survivor Series event this year will stray a bit from previous installments. This one will be less about supremacy and more about the stories being told in the ring.

“This will not be Raw versus SmackDown. It will be much more story-line driven. I still look at it as a traditional component to Survivor Series in there because it’s large teams of people competing. We just upped the ante a little bit with WarGames and made it evolve," Triple H said.

The Motivation

Triple H shared with The Ringer the reasons behind bringing back the iconic match for this event. And according to The Game, he made the decision by simply coming at it as a fan first.

“One of the things that Vince used to always say is if you put yourself in the seats, you could never go wrong. Now, all fans have different points of view. All you gotta do is go online now and you’ll see every single person has a different point of view and they’re happy to express it. But I think if you go out there and you think, What would you wanna see? If you’re a fan and you just love what we do, what would you want to see?” Triple H said.

Evolution Is A Must

Another big factor in this decision is simply the timing. Triple H saw an opportunity to evolve the product, and believed now was the time to do it.

“Survivor Series has been an amazing event for 36 years. And it needs to evolve a little bit and this year seemed like the right time to do it,” Triple H said.
